Professional interns
Find a supervising architect
Your supervisor must be a licensed architect who meets RIA's conditions. You choose them; RIA confirms they are eligible.
Who may supervise
Your training must be supervised by a professional member of the Institute who is licensed for the current year and has at least three years of professional practice experience. RIA confirms your supervisor's eligibility as part of your registration.
Architects who have said they are willing
RIA publishes a list of licensed architects who have indicated they will take an intern, filterable by district and by the kind of work their practice does. Being on the list is not an offer and not a commitment — it means the conversation is welcome.
How to approach one
Write briefly. Say where you studied and when you graduated, what kind of work you want exposure to, and whether you are seeking employment or supervision of a post you already hold. Attach a short portfolio. Expect to be interviewed; a supervisor is putting their registration behind your work for two years and is entitled to be selective.
What to agree before you commit
Agree these four things in writing
- The range of work you will be exposed to, and whether it covers everything RIA requires.
- How often your record will be reviewed and signed.
- What happens if they leave the firm or stop practising.
- Whether the arrangement is tied to your employment, and what happens if the job ends.
