Professional interns
Register as a professional intern
You register once, at the start. Your internship period runs from the date RIA admits you, not from the date you started work.
What you must supply
Your degree
Your notified degree certificate and transcript from a recognised architecture programme.
Identity documents
Your national identity document or passport, and a passport photograph.
Your supervisor's acceptance
The supervising architect's written acceptance, with their registration number. Have it ready before you begin.
The application and fee
The completed application and the fee set out in the fee schedule.
Cost
What it costs
The annual fee while you remain an intern is RWF 100,000, payable from six months after your professional training begins. The fees page carries the full schedule and how to pay.
When your two years start
Your internship period starts on the date your registration takes effect, not on the date you started work. This is the single most important date in your professional life so far; keep the letter that states it.
Once you are registered
- Your name appears on the public register as a professional intern, with your registration number.
- You may practise under supervision. You may not offer architectural services independently.
- You begin recording your work — see During your internship.
FAQ
Can I register before I find a supervisor?
No. The supervising architect is part of the application.
My supervisor changed jobs between applying and being admitted.
Tell the Registrar before the decision is taken, or the record will be wrong from day one.
Does my name really appear publicly?
Yes, as a professional intern. It protects you: a client who checks your name sees that you are registered and supervised, rather than finding no record at all.
